Keep Abreast of What the Legislature Is Doing to You

As we head into the next Legislative Session in January 2019, there will be many issues addressed, many of which will carry over from the 2018 Session.  The invalidation of the S.B. 2922 constitutional amendment means the issue of funding our schools will come up again.  Funding the Honolulu rail project continues to be a concern, and the dynamics have changed this year now that the City & County of Honolulu has abandoned its prohibition on using property taxes to fund rail.  Budget writers will have more tough choices to make, as Hawaii County is expected to ask for massive amounts of funding related to Kilauea’s recent eruption.  Also, expect bills that didn’t make it out of last year’s session to surface again like:  the “AirBnB Bill” to collect taxes for transient vacation rental owners, taxation of real estate investment trusts, expansion of the solar credit to include battery backup systems, and Department of Transportation-sponsored hikes in fuel taxes and related taxes and fees to shore up the highway fund.

There will also be updates on current Foundation activity regarding the various Amicus Curiae briefings filed and the still unresolved skim lawsuit.

We have selected dates for our briefings to coincide with key dates of the legislative calendar.  The briefings, at The Pacific Club, begin at 7:30 a.m. (they should last no more than one hour each) and will include a continental breakfast.  The dates are:

  • Tuesday, February 19, 2019 (After First Lateral)
  • Tuesday, March 19, 2019 (After First Decking)
  • Tuesday, April 9, 2019 (After Second Decking)
  • Tuesday, May 14, 2019 (Final Wrap-Up)

Please see the event registration form for pricing and details.  If you have additional questions or require special accommodations, please call the Foundation’s staff at 808-536-4587.
